Movie Review #Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)

Kapoor & Sons since 1921 is a Family story par excellence. A family like mine or yours that could be as dysfunctional from inside as it looks normal from inside. It touches upon very normal issues in a very sensitive and heart warming manner.Like the issue of financial crunches and what it can do to the peace and harmony of the family. The resultant stress, dejection and frustration of just managing to make ends meet and how it can affect the family..The issue of sibling rivalry and Parents preferential treatment to one of the kids, though a commonly observed issue, but the sensitivity with which it is potrayed in the movie, really makes it noteworthy. .The lack of trust between family members, the life of a Empty nester senior couple, who are going  through issues of their own, lends a certain maturity to the movie. Then there is the grand old man, who's lived life and now at the twilight of his life, all he wants, is to spend happy days with his family and pamper his libido

The movie boasts of an ensemble star cast and each of them was just right for the role they potrayes.

Veteran actress Ratna Pathak Shah, displayed an amazing range of emoting and histrionics with her character moving from a harrowed and always bickering and nagging mother to a more stern, mature and bereaved woman who has come to cope with a big loss, husbands Infidelty, revelation of  son being gay and losing the trust of the other son..One wonders if bollywood has crated the modern day , practical and no non sense woman slot  & Ratna Pathak just fits into that perfectly. We have had crying mothers, sad mothers, sacrificing mothers, even chilled out mothers ( Kirron Kher fits here) but the modern day practical mom slot , has to be Ratna Pathaks, as her personality does full justice to that..Remember her famous Sarabhai series from Televison

Rajat Kapoor is simply outstanding, or rather as usual in every role he takes up.Playing the role of a father, struggling to keep his finances up, and stuck between a nagging wife and an over enthusiastic father, Rajat Kapoor, just does the Friendly Dad, A failed businessman and a frustrated husband act to the "T"

The Grand old man, Rishi Kapoor, who plays the Family patriarch, is the man to watch out for..Kapoor, just seals it by delivering probably the best performance of his otherwise commercially successful career...Here Kapoor travels to a territory,  he has never done before and played crazily with his looks..As the ugly old man, Kapoor has shed all fears, inhibitions and restrains of an actor from an illustrious family. ..He has payed to the character, as dirty as an old man of 90 could get..
I will not be surprise if Rishi Kapoor is winning all the supporting actor awards this year for his work..

Fawad.khan and Sidhartha Malhotra do full justice to their part. The tension between the siblings is really well captured and kudos to the screenplay for that..The lack of trust and understanding between the siblings, yet that unsaid thin line of respect is very well documented. Alia batt,  has a small but significant part as Sidhartha Malhotras love interest. She is a natural in screen

All in all, Kapoor and sons is a brilliant movie with vet fine perforomances. .Rishi Kapoor will kill you with his one liners..The Highlight of the movie for me are the 2 scenes

One is where we have the family reunion followed by the Antakshri and the 2nd scene is one when Rishi Kapoor is shown having a joint with his 2 grandsons and reminiscing on good old times..
